‘Interesting,’ Charlie said, turning to Sam. ‘That was definitely a male voice.’
The bug that Rosie had planted was feeding into both The Dungeon and the OP, and they had just heard the commotion and shouting. It hadn’t been clear enough to hear the assault itself, but clearly something had just happened, and they were both certain it was a man they had heard.
She nodded and glanced through the net curtains at the flat across the road.
‘I doubt she’d shout at herself, and it didn’t sound like the TV.’
‘I only wish we had better audio in there, or a visual feed.’
Charlie paced away from the monitor and lightly clapped his hands together as he thought. ‘We can’t go back in overtly,’ he said, thinking aloud. ‘I think we’ve run our course with that-anything more would be too obvious. We could get her out but we can’t go in covertly if he’s still in there.’
‘We’d be inviting a bullet, I think,’ Sam said.
Charlie nodded, punching a fist lightly into the palm of his other hand. As far as he could see at the moment, they could only work with what they already had.
‘It’s gotta be him,’ he said, ‘there’s no reason for anyone else to be hiding in there.’
‘Gotta be,’ Sam agreed.
Charlie snapped his fingers and pointed at her.
‘We’ll get the cops to do a flyover with Eagle,’ he said, referring to the Police Air Support Unit, ‘they can check with the infra-red for heat sources.’
‘Nice one.’
He shook his head with chagrin.
‘Should’ve done that at the start.’
‘Better late than never.’
He fired off a quick text to Scooter to get a flyover organised for the evening. A helicopter flying overhead at night was not uncommon in the area, so shouldn’t arouse any suspicion.
‘Maybe the pressure’s getting to him,’ Sam said. ‘Can’t be easy being on the run for so long.’
He joined her at the side of the window and they gazed across the road as if they could see into the flat itself. Charlie raised his hands as if holding a rifle.
‘It’d be an easy shot from here,’ he said, sighting down an imaginary barrel. ‘Cause a distraction to get him outside and just pop him.’
Sam glanced round, their shoulders brushing together as she looked at him.
‘Maybe you’ve got more in common with your mate than you thought,’ she said cheekily.
Charlie frowned.
‘Really.’
‘He was asking about you,’ she said. ‘He thinks you don’t like him for some reason.’
‘I just don’t like not calling the shots when I’m running a job.’ He was still frowning as he searched her face, knowing she was needling him but unable to resist biting.
‘Oh, oops. I told him you don’t like Army guys and think the Group are a bunch of pussies.’
Charlie gave her a disapproving look but couldn’t help grinning. He bumped her with his shoulder and she grinned.
‘Dick,’ he said.
‘We had a discussion about how he’s the guest,’ Sam told him. ‘I think we both know where we stand now.’
Charlie nodded and pursed his lips thoughtfully.
‘Good,’ he said.
